Have you been thinking about making the jump from FTE to consulting? Here are some things to consider before making the switch and how to find the right role for you.

Choosing a Consulting Firm

Partnering with a consulting firm that is right for you is the first and most important step when considering making the switch. Finding a firm that makes you feel supported throughout your transition from FTE to consulting is key. You will have a lot of questions and will need guidance and advice on everything from hotels to proper consulting conduct. Having a trusting relationship with your firm will lay the groundwork for a positive work experience for you. A good recruiting firm will be a resource for you throughout every step of the process and project.

Length of Project

Leaving a stable full-time role for a consulting position can be a bit scary. Each consulting position will have a different contract length depending on the type of project and needs for the health system. Make sure you are comfortable with the longevity of the position, and realize that you may be looking for a new role in three months! Prepare to be looking for your next project at least 30 days before your expected end date. Make sure to find out the duration of the role and if there is the likelihood of an extension.

Type of Project

In many consulting roles, you are brought in as the "expert" and will be treated as such. There are brand new implementations, upgrades, and various post go-live optimization projects that you could be brought on for. Make sure it is the day-to-day work that you like to do. If you love to build and that is your bread and butter, you may not enjoy being brought on as a Support Analyst. Make sure to ask what projects you will be working on!

Location of Project and Onsite Requirements

When considering a consulting role, make sure you confirm how often you are required to be on-site. Some roles, you are required to be onsite Monday through Thursday and that could require cross-country travel depending on where you are coming from. Be sure you look into flights and travel time and be sure you're comfortable committing to that travel schedule.

Expense Policy

Each health system has different rules regarding how and what you will be reimbursed for. Some hospitals have all- inclusive rates which can be tricky if you're traveling cross- country, so be sure to look into flight costs in advance if that is the case. Also, be aware of what you will be reimbursed for before leaving for your project, and if you need to keep receipts!

Consulting can be an amazing experience and the step to progress your Epic career, if done right! Follow these tips to get you started on the right foot!
