SME stands for subject matter expert, and a Healthcare SME is a person who is an expert in their field. These people are key members of implementations and ongoing support. A subject matter expert in Healthcare IT provides expert knowledge and support for end-users of clinical software. These professional SMEs are important because they can bridge the gap between clinical and technical staff.

How to become a SME:

1. Focus (most important)

  • Focus on one area! It's extremely difficult to be a SME in one area, let alone multiple, so stick to one or two at the most so you can be recognized as the go-to resource for the module, technology, or software.

  • Get those years under your belt in one area. A SME has done and seen it all in their area of expertise. It’s important you have the knowledge, experience, and education to support and educate others.

  • Stay up-to-date on news and updates on your area of expertise (continuing education, new relevant certifications, industry updates, etc.).

2. Attributes

  • Have a willingness and positive attitude to help others and learn new software and processes.

  • Look at your daily functions and workflows through a critical lens to offer advice and solutions.

  • Always be willing to educate yourself further.

  • Help the organization navigate the decision-making process.

  • Have the ability to find inefficiencies with workflows and processes.

  • Make a strong reputation for yourself.

  • Step up, have a voice, and stay humble.

3. Share

  • Share ongoing advice and solutions to frequent challenges.

  • Provide valuable insight and perspective.

  • Share your knowledge and expertise in any way you can.

  • Share information on your field.

4. Connect

  • Stay active on social media (the #healthit community has a strong online presence).

  • Join groups relevant to your area of expertise.

  • Post exciting news or information on your field.

  • Attend industry events where you can learn or share your knowledge.
