How To Become a SME
(Originally posted on LinkedIn)
SME stands for subject matter expert, and a Healthcare SME is a person who is an expert in their field. These people are key members of implementations and ongoing support. A subject matter expert in Healthcare IT provides expert knowledge and support for end-users of clinical software. These professional SMEs are important because they can bridge the gap between clinical and technical staff.
How to become a SME:
1. Focus (most important)
Focus on one area! It's extremely difficult to be a SME in one area, let alone multiple, so stick to one or two at the most so you can be recognized as the go-to resource for the module, technology, or software.
Get those years under your belt in one area. A SME has done and seen it all in their area of expertise. It’s important you have the knowledge, experience, and education to support and educate others.
Stay up-to-date on news and updates on your area of expertise (continuing education, new relevant certifications, industry updates, etc.).
2. Attributes
Have a willingness and positive attitude to help others and learn new software and processes.
Look at your daily functions and workflows through a critical lens to offer advice and solutions.
Always be willing to educate yourself further.
Help the organization navigate the decision-making process.
Have the ability to find inefficiencies with workflows and processes.
Make a strong reputation for yourself.
Step up, have a voice, and stay humble.
3. Share
Share ongoing advice and solutions to frequent challenges.
Provide valuable insight and perspective.
Share your knowledge and expertise in any way you can.
Share information on your field.
4. Connect
Stay active on social media (the #healthit community has a strong online presence).
Join groups relevant to your area of expertise.
Post exciting news or information on your field.
Attend industry events where you can learn or share your knowledge.
