How to Find Your Why
(Originally posted on LinkedIn)
We go through our busy lives knowing what we do and how we do it, but do we know why?
Simon Sinek states "The WHY is the purpose, cause or belief that drives every one of us." No matter who you are, or where you are in your life, there is one constant thing that should be the guide to fulfilling what is most important to you and that is your WHY. Your WHY is designed to live a life of purpose, and to have the understanding of why we do what we do and to have confidence in where we are going.
"Happiness comes from what we do. Fulfillment comes from why we do it."
Before you start creating one, it might be helpful to have an example to reference…
Personally, my WHY is this: "To help others and make everyone I come in contact with have confidence so that they can feel their absolute best." I was able to fulfill this why in Fashion and now in Epic staffing. Nothing fills me up more than knowing I had an impact on making someone feel that much more confident.
Start by asking yourself these questions:
WHY you do what you do?
What drives you to wake up in the morning?
What fulfills you the most?
What are you strengths and things that come naturally to you?
What makes you smile?
What do you look forward to?
What are the things you would do for free?
Use this simple format from Simon's team to use as we draft our WHY Statement:
Your WHY: "TO ____ SO THAT ____."
The first blank represents your contribution — the contribution you make to the lives others through your WHY. And the second blank represents the impact of your contribution.
Your job is to plug-in the blanks to create your own unique WHY Statement!
"If we want to feel an undying passion for our work, if we want to feel we are contributing to something bigger than ourselves, we all need to know our WHY." - Simon Sinek
